VERA Program Overview

Included are VERA's logic-controlled visual acuity tests for right eye, left eye and both eyes and the hyperopia ("plus lens" or farsightedness) screening test. You can purchase an inexpensive pair of +2.00 reading glasses at a drugstore for this test or our recommended VERA test lens flipper. The flipper contains high quality hyperopia screening lenses on one side and colored filters for the following free binocular vision tests on the other.
Included are three binocular vision tests which determine if the subject can momentarily use both eyes together. Each test emphasizes a different aspect of binocular vision: combining the image from each eye with the other (suppression), depth appreciation (stereopsis) and eye alignment (fixation disparity). This is different from the vision skills screening described below, which characterizes how easily subjects sustain binocular vision, focusing and eye tracking over time.
The VERA test lens flipper is recommended for the binocular vision tests to assure proper cancellation of test screen colors. When using all of the free VERA tests in a school setting, the program will identify virtually all visually deficient students* required by state vision screening regulations! Alternately, you'll be able to choose whether to run the hyperopia screening and/or each binocular vision test.
Included are an eye doctor’s report with your personal information and screening results inserted, a letter to parents requesting an eye examination for their child and a screening results report for institutional or professional use. You'll be able to choose which of these automatically print after each screening and be able to re‐print each for any subject at any time.
People with abnormal vision skills have to work through the increased effort necessary to control focus, tracking and binocular coordination. This extra effort can become an impediment to attentiveness, schoolwork, learning and occupational performance. By example, up to half of learning disabled students struggle with learning-related vision difficulties. Once identified, many could be helped to avoid failure in school with fewer expensive special education services!
Most vision skills difficulties occur in people with normal or corrected visual acuity, and so identifying them has required highly trained personnel or a vision specialist. With VERA, the majority of these people can now be identified by schools, occupational and other therapists and any doctor. You can view the vision skills tests to see how they work, but scoring the tests requires a program upgrade and the VERA test lens flippers.
